Winners of iWrite Essay Inter-secondary 👨👩👧👦 Competition in Kebbi State 2020
The iWrite Essay Competition held in Birnin-kebbi on Monday, February 10, 2020 at Government Girls Unity College was an initiative to improve the creativity and transform the lives of students in the state through writing.10 schools across Birnin-kebbi local government area showed interest but only 9 came for the competition having students for both the Junior and Senior category.
The essay competition started by 09:30am with Junior category having the topic; HOW AGRICULTURE CAN BE IMPROVED IN NIGERIA and the Senior category having the topic; THE RIGHT OF THE GIRL-CHILD TO EDUCATION and a time frame of 1 hour 15 minutes was allocated.
5 marks was awarded to students who arrived at the venue before 09:15am. This was to discourage late coming among students in the state.
After the essay competition, the students were given time for recess and an opportunity to network among themselves after which the second stage of the competition commenced.
Then the students were shared in groups for the quiz competition. The group comprises of students from both the Junior and Senior category and across various schools. This was done to build team spirit and discourage discrimination.
Cultural barriers were put away as the male students conversed freely with the female students to ensure their group came top.
The quiz lasted for 1 hour and 25 minutes, then there was an interactive section with the students where they shared their experience.
The students expressed gratitude to the organisers of the competition because it was an avenue to work with students from other schools.
One of the students said she wouldnβt have been able to answer the quiz alone but working as a team made her to think outside the box and see from a different point of view. Another student said the quiz was new to her as it was her first time to attempt something as unique as it and that improved her creativity.
The results for the iWrite essay competition was released with AMUSAN CALEB from MCPHERSON INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL emerging the winner for the JUNIOR CATEGORY with a total of 46 points out of 50.
OSITA PAMELA and OKENWA BENEDICTA both from SAINT DOMINIC SCHOOL emerged first and second runner up respectively for the JUNIOR CATEGORY.
VICTOR AWODI from SAINT DOMINIC SCHOOL emerged winner for the SENIOR CATEGORY with a total of 49 points out of 50.
FIRDAUSI MUHAMMAD NATAβALA and HAFSAT JAFAR GULMA both from ABI PRIVATE SCHOOL emerged first and second runner up for the SENIOR CATEGORY.
It was however noticed that majority of the participants were girls and they were eager to learn. It was evident that the education of the girl-child was necessary as the girls in the group contributed immensely to the success of their team.
The winners for both categories were given awards and cash prizes. All members of the group that won the quiz competition were given gifts too. The girl-child also won awards for themselves as they were not left out. The participants for the competition were given Certificate for Participation and the event ended with a photoshoot.
