THE LOGO OF FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH SCIENCE, OTUKPO: A Manifestation of Tribalism and Future Marginalization of the Igede and Tiv Extractions of Benue State.
Democracy as postulated by Abraham Lincoln is government of the people, for the people and by the people. However, tribalism and religion differences have rendered the definition by the late Sage nugatory in the Nigeria context. The reason why people are send in both the green and red chambers is to bring development to the grassroots and to serve as a bridge between the government and the people. One of which the newly Federal University of Health Science, Otukpo is inclusive. However, the inclusion of Idoma cultural colours on the Logo of the institution is a clear demonstration of tribalism.
This is because the institution is a creation of the Federal Government under relevant Federal Laws and not the state or a particular enthic group. The institution is created to ease educational backwardness in the health sector for all the citizens of Nigeria not Benue state; not to talk of a particular ethnic group. Displaying the cultural colours of a particular ethnic group on the logo which is a symbolic representation of the institution both local and international is very incongruous, same is timid and exhibition of custom in an improper way.
This is because the institution is not a single person’s property like Joy FM, Otukpo, AshiWave FM, Katsina-Ala among others. This is not the first time we are having a Federal University in Benue State. Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi which was created under the blessed administration of late Sir Aper Aku of blessed memory, the logo of the institution does not have any Tiv cultural display on it, showing that it is for all. Experiencing this now in Otukpo is incongruous and exhibition of custom in a timid way.
Let unity lead. Nigeria is for us all. And this country is too big for any man being you who to control. Federal University of Health Science, Otukpo is a Federal parastatal and not a cultural institution. It is for all Nigerians. The Idoma cultural colours on the logo is put without due consideration, same is erroneous and in the long-run a clear manifestation of tribalism.
